Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my catalytic converter is full?
Common symptoms of a clogged catalytic converter include the engine check light coming on, difficulty starting the car, poor acceleration, a sulfur or rotten egg smell, engine misfires, and poor fuel economy.
Can I unclog my catalytic converter?
A clogged catalytic converter exhibits symptoms like an illuminated check engine light, reduced engine performance, and emission test failure. You can sometimes use a special fuel additive kit to unclog the catalytic converter, but replacing the clogged part is often necessary.
How do I know if it's my catalytic converter or O2 sensor?
To check if it's a clogged cat versus a bad oxygen sensor (when you don't have a check engine light), grab a vacuum gauge. Connect the gauge to an intake manifold vacuum line. Start the engine, let it idle, and check the reading on the gauge.
How long should a catalytic converter last?
A new catalytic converter should last for around 10 years but, as with most other vehicle components, the exact lifespan can differ. Mileage and engine tune can impact on the durability of the item, so it's worth checking the condition after 50,000 miles.
